Comment on Music Pro by Piers https://etymotic.com/product/music-pro/#comment-204944 Sat, 18 Oct 2025 19:36:26 +0000 #comment-204944 Good for protecting my ears, but not as flat as they suggest
They seem to work well generally, they definitely reduce the overall level and I just came away from two 6 hour rehearsal sessions (not actually non-stop playing) without my ears feeling compressed. What I did find, however, was that they cut both bass and high treble, leaving more in the mid-range. There were some comments from the others about me having too much bottom end for certain keyboards sounds (e.g. piano, organ), but I just wasn’t hearing it.

This is probably fine for listening to other bands, but in a rehearsal situation it would make certain keyboard sounds stand out more / less than others, and make balancing my levels harder. I had to rely on knowing roughly where my foot usually is on volume pedals rather than just judging what I could actually hear. This is OK for tracks that have been played loads of times before, but if I was working on a new song I’d need to take the plugs out for accuracy. For info, I play keyboards in a 70s Genesis tribute, so there are a lot of different sounds being reproduced.

I wore them with the flip switch in the 9dB ‘high’ mode, as that gave me a little more open high treble. It did, however, increase the low volume active boost, which led to some slightly disconcerting volume ‘pumping’ when the rest of the band shut up. This also meant that heard volumes were not so accurate.

For these reasons, I probably won’t wear them for the three shows we’re doing next weekend, but we generally try and keep the on-stage volumes sensible, and it’s only for 2 hours of music a night, so probably OK. I will absolutely wear them when going to see other bands, however!

Three stars, because at the price I would have liked a flatter EQ, especially at low frequencies.

How can they cheap out on these, original would not hold onto cable and then broke when having to slide on for 100th time and $5 is what you want for that? Crazy

Comment on ER4XR Earphones by Robert Meyer https://etymotic.com/product/er4xr-earphones/#comment-204937 Mon, 06 Oct 2025 08:21:57 +0000 https://etymotic.com/product/er4xr-earphones/#comment-204937 ER4XA replaced ER4P, very happy!
Bought the ER4P in 2003 after reading reviews. Initially had to learn to insert properly. The sound was like being present in person if the recording was descent. Damaged the cord in 2017 which Etymotic repaired. I miss that aspect of their business. My only wish that the ER4P had a bit higher curve in the bass region. One tip broke in 2025 probably due to stress in its case. Soon ordered the ER4XR as I did not want to use my over the ear noise cancelling phones mowing the lawn and other times of sweat. The ER4XR fixed the bass complaint. Am very happy with the purchase. As a result, picked up a another for a spare. The clarity is amazing. The aluminum casing should be stronger, more durable, than the plastic ER4P. I mostly listen to classical music and movies at home when I really want the sound quality. I carry them most places I go. Also use cheap $20 Axxxx phones which are also amazing when I want to easily hear other things going on in the surroundings.

Full time professional musician here, been suffering from a raging case of tinnitus for years. I had stepped away from playing full time because of it. Found these devices a few months back, and I believe they are the best option I’ve tried yet, or that currently exist one the market. I love the pass thru at low volumes to hear MDs/Conductors in rehearsal, and the ability to squash sudden loud sounds. The main – and only complaint is the absence of bass response. I’m a bassist, and I find it pretty frustrating that I can’t hear myself accurately. If this processing were available with the fidelity of, say, Ultimate Ears UE-11 Pro monitors, THEN they would get 5 stars! Can you make that happen?

Comment on ER4XR Earphones by Carl https://etymotic.com/product/er4xr-earphones/#comment-204932 Sat, 27 Sep 2025 01:06:40 +0000 https://etymotic.com/product/er4xr-earphones/#comment-204932 Finally time for new Etys
After being a first ER4P (with the S adapter) buyer in 2004, I finally had to buy new Etys as the cord had one too many cuts and the left filter housing starting to crack. The 4S always felt a bit light in the lower region compared with playing in live acoustic orchestras, so I went with the XR and am incredibly happy with the choice. The 4P was only ever used for travelling when I did not have enough power to drive it as an S, and the loss in treble was always painful before getting used to it over longer flights. The 4P’s tilt never sat right with me, even if I did wish for a bit more body in the bass.

I don’t doubt that I would have been happy with the SR also, given how crazy good the 4S was in many recordings that didn’t really include as much lower region. It is hard to properly compare mid and high on the XR with the 4S as I am so used to the 4S which has some songs shine on that model specifically. With the XR, I am appreciating most things and it does have a more similar sound profile to my mastering studio’s main speakers. It doesn’t quite have the same effortless deep end though, so the XR is a bit more muffled comparatively speaking. They are a tad higher than my studio in the low end, but not disturbingly so. I think the transition between lower mid and bass is where I would have primarily loved a db less or so, but that is just a guess ofc.

My 4S was always good to check some mid and top end on, so I suspect the SR would have served the same purpose. My IEMs aren’t really for that purpose though, as I use them more for travelling and when I am in noisy surroundings. I truly appreciate having an Ety that can give me that more overall similar impression of whatever I play.

In terms of comparisons with other IEM, nothing has ever sat as well in my ears and I simply cannot fly with anything else. As I like listening for a long time, the fit is absolutely key to how I feel about IEMs. If you like a deep fit, there is no competition to Etys. An absolute steal for the money also, no matter the price range I have compared with.
